Who We Are
The Maldives Association for Energy Efficiency (MAEE) is a non-profit organization committed to advancing energy efficiency and sustainable energy practices across the Maldives. We work across sectors to promote efficient energy use, reduce environmental impact, and contribute to national resilience and sustainability goals. MAEE collaborates with government institutions, the private sector, civil society, and international partners to create a more energy-conscious Maldives through technical programs, policy support, and public engagement.
MAEE was founded in 2024 by its founders, who recognized a critical gap in the Maldives’ energy transition. Despite rising electricity demand and increasing reliance on imported fossil fuels, energy efficiency remained largely neglected. With extensive experience across public institutions and international programs, they established MAEE to advance practical, efficiency-focused solutions that connect policy, technical expertise, and public engagement.

Our Vision
A Maldives that leads in energy efficiency and resilience, powered by clean, reliable, and inclusive energy solutions.
Our Mission
To drive energy efficiency and low-emission development by supporting policy, enabling technology adoption, building local capacity, and fostering public-private partnerships.
Our Work
The Maldives Association for Energy Efficiency (MAEE) is committed to advancing practical, scalable solutions that address the Maldives’ growing energy demands while supporting national climate goals. Our work spans four key areas:

Appliance Energy Efficiency
We promote the use of energy-efficient appliances to reduce electricity demand, household electricity costs, and greenhouse gas emissions. Our work includes consumer awareness, market monitoring, and support for energy labeling initiatives such as the Hakathari Program. We also support the capacity development of key stakeholders, including importers, retailers, and salespersons, to improve their understanding of energy-efficient technologies and strengthen their ability to communicate benefits to consumers.

Building Energy Efficiency
MAEE advances energy-smart design and construction practices to reduce energy demand, enhance comfort, and support resilient development. We advocate for the use of the Energy Efficiency Guideline for Buildings, promote passive cooling strategies, natural ventilation, and efficient lighting systems. Our work also supports technical training for architects, engineers, and builders, and highlights model buildings and renovations that demonstrate best practices in energy performance.

Clean Energy Integration
We support the expansion of solar and other renewable energy technologies to provide reliable, affordable, and sustainable power across all islands. Our efforts include promoting solar PV awareness and integration, supporting best practices in battery storage systems, and advocating for microgrid and smart energy design solutions.

GHG Mitigation Support
MAEE contributes to national greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation efforts through policy analysis, sector-specific recommendations, and improved access to data for low-emission development. We engage in collaborative initiatives that support the Maldives’ Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), provide training on GHG monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV), and promote low-carbon practices in key sectors such as transport, housing, and tourism.
